Japanese Classes for Non-native Students – Fukuoka City

Fukuoka City’s education board has established a comprehensive tutoring system for students requiring Japanese language instruction to assist them in quickly adjusting to their new environment and living independently in Japan.

The new Japanese language instruction system has been established to improve the existing instruction and support system, which varied from school to school. Japanese language support centers, base schools, and schools employing teachers in charge of language instruction have been established in the city as part of a new, large-scale municipal program.

The new system is comprised of the following steps –

(1) Parents of students who require Japanese tutoring are encouraged to meet with school officials, who will then contact the city’s Japanese Language Support Center.

(2) The coordinator of the Japanese Language Support Center will then interview the students and their parents and, in consultation with both, will decide how to best proceed with the required studies.

(3) The teacher or Japanese language instructor in charge will provide Japanese language instruction at the base school (*1), a nearby school employing a teacher in charge of Japanese language instruction (*2), or the school in which the student is enrolled.

• Students can receive intensive initial instruction in the Japanese language (basic reading and writing, necessary for daily life and learning) at the base schools.

Base schools are located at Uchihama Elementary School, Haruyoshi Elementary School, Shirohama Elementary School, Chikushigaoka Elementary School, Shiroka Junior High School, Hakata Junior High School, Haruyoshi Junior High School, and Iki Junior High School.

• Students can also receive additional Japanese language instruction, as required for academic subjects at the schools they regularly attend, with Japanese language instructors.

This service is available at 8 elementary schools – Uchihama Elementary School, Hakata Elementary School, Haruyoshi Elementary School, Shirohama Elementary School, Kashihama Elementary School, Teruha Elementary School, Hakomatsu Elementary School, and Higashi Hakozaki Elementary School – as well as in 5 junior high schools – Momochi Junior High School, Hakata Junior High School, Haruyoshi Junior High School, Shiroka Junior High School, and Teruha Junior High School.
