It is a plastic card containing an IC chip and bears your registered name, address, date of birth & gender – your “My Number” (unique national ID number) and photographs are also displayed on the card.

The card has various versatile uses in Japan, as listed below, and can be used as a loadable debit card, pre-loaded with a registration bonus of 5,000 JPY – an additional 15,000 JPY compensation is available for the claim if the card is used for registration to various national/municipal services, as well as loaded with 20,000 JPY of your own funds for future use.

Photo ID (replacing the need for a resident card or driver’s license) – the card can be used in a wide range of situations, such as opening a bank account in a financial institution, having a new passport issued (for Japanese nationals), providing proof of age at various venues or for various age limit purchases, etc. Furthermore, the “My Number” card does not single out its bearer as a non-Japanese national, as opposed to a resident card, but is a standard form of Japanese ID document.

When asked to confirm your unique national ID number – While your national ID number also appears on various paper-based on documents issued by your local ward office and other authorities, presenting the “Myna card” instead is an easy way to do so whenever required.

Online application for various administrative procedures – Your card can be used to apply online for a variety of governmental procedures, such as registrations for various services, events, etc. (*).
Online transactions – It is expected that the card will be available for various private online transactions, including online banking services, in the near future.

Obtain official certificates at convenience stores (*) – You can obtain official certificates, usually requiring personal attendance at your local ward office, such as a family record (“koseki tohon,” address or seal registration certificate (“jumihyo,” “inkan shiome,” etc., using automated machines at convenience stores.

Consolidation of other municipal services – Multiple different types of cards, currently necessary for various services provided
nationally or by local municipalities, may be integrated into
your single, individual card. (**)

(*) Since the various services provided can differ depending on the municipality, please get in touch with your local ward office for more details.

(**) Does not apply in cases of application error, insufficient documentation, etc. Details may vary between municipalities – it is recommended to confirm the services available on your
local municipality’s home page, or in person at your local ward office.

Please note – your card will usually be issued within one month from the application. You will receive notification by post once your card has been issued and will then be able to come and collect it from your local ward office.
